HAAS

A creek-side setting. A north facing one-story ranch home. A long narrow front yard. A decision to dispense with the turf.

We chose Sonoma Moss Rock boulders to link the property to the rugged creek banks and monumental trees nearby. For the sunny portion of the front yard, we selected plants that bloom much of the year and stay low, to complement the boulders, and not overwhelm the single story home. Bright green small grasses and foxtail asparagus ferns enliven the middle zone between sun and shade. At the house, ferns and other shade lovers flourish. In each of the exposure zones, some California natives were included: manzanitas, variegated ceanothus, Pacific Coast iris.

The vibrant green palette works with the sunny yellow house paint color, and with the existing dogwoods, maple and ferns. Using drifts of plants and the repetition of simple plant combinations prevents the plant scheme from becoming too busy.
