For this backyard remodel, the clients
wanted an Old World, cottage garden look, to suit their English Tudor style
home. They requested abundant blooms, in a pastel color palette, and a small
turf area for their young children. A new petanque court at the back serves
multiple purposes. It provides space for games and for auxiliary seating, and
it enhances circulation.
An old walnut tree and a pittosporum hedge were
retained. The walnut adds age and character to the garden, and welcome shade.
The pittosporums formed an important privacy screen. Their limbed up white
trunks create a pleasing rhythm.
The grapesticks from an old fence were
saved and reused on new posts and rails. Although this garden is only a few
years old, it looks like it has been here for generations.
