This site included a mid-century
modern home, a Chinese Evergreen Elm in front and a Coast Live Oak in back.
Extreme slopes and occasional extreme heat presented design challenges. The
client preferred a naturalistic design with habitat friendly plants and plenty
of boulders.
Asian influenced plants were chosen
for the front, to go with the Chinese Evergreen Elm. Many decades worth of
Algerian Ivy was replaced with Shore Juniper, groundcover cotoneaster, and Berkeley
Sedge, planted between Napa Basalt boulders. For this extreme slope, serious
erosion controllers were needed.
In the back we selected plants that
could beat the heat. California natives and Southern European perennials now
keep company with the Coast Live Oak. Sonoma Moss Rock boulders resolve this
gentler slope.
